For high-calibre undergraduates in their penultimate year, our summer internship programme is a fantastic opportunity to experience life and work at BDO.

A useful insight into our business and culture, our summer internship will help you decide whether to apply for our graduate programme. You’ll get a real taste of life at the heart of our firm, working on interesting projects alongside graduate trainees and experienced professionals.

Our internship programme lasts six weeks – running from early July to mid-August each year, in offices across the UK. The 2020 internship programme begins in July 2020.

What we’ll expose you to:

A range of different clients in different sectors

BDO partners and managers

Other interns – through social and internal events

Graduate trainees – who will provide
insights on career prospects

A specific project – that will make a real business difference.

Valuable work experience to add to your skills and CV

A deep understanding of how a professional services firm operates, so you can make an informed career decision

The opportunity to work alongside and learn from industry experts

The chance to build contacts and networks within BDO

The programme

The internship is structured to provide you with exposure – not only to real clients, but also training and development that will help with both your placement and final year at university.

All interns spend their first week in a BDO office taking part in a number of employability sessions and technical training. The first two days concentrate on skills including: teamwork, communication and commercial awareness along with an induction to BDO. For the final three days you undertake training with our technical standards group to ensure you are able to work on real client assignments, regardless of your background or previous work experience.

During this week, there’ll be a number of social activities planned that will give you the chance to get to know other interns and start building a professional network from across the country.

For the next four and a half weeks you’ll work on client assignments with the team and office you have applied to join. We aim to provide interns with jobs that a 1st year graduate trainee would do – so you’ll gain an in depth understanding of what BDO do and what a graduate role looks like with us.

From showing you where the stationery is, to how best to complete your day-to-day work, you’ll also be assigned a buddy to help you settle into life at BDO. Your counselling manager has a more formal role, and will meet with you on your first day in the office to set your objectives. They’ll support you in achieving them and will be responsible for your final review process.

During this time most interns are exposed to between 2-4 different clients, as well as engaging with team members of all grades.

In the last two days of your placement you’ll travel to London. This is a team social and group project presentation which you will have worked on during your placement.

These last days are a great opportunity for the interns to meet up and discuss their experiences with the firm. It also gives the recruitment team a chance to see how the students have developed during their placement.

Before the internship ends, students will have a final interview with the partner in their department. This interview is competency based and takes into account feedback interns have received during their placement.

On completing the internship we try to let students know the outcome of their placement as soon possible – usually within a maximum of ten days. If you’ve been successful, you’ll receive an offer for the graduate programme the following year (conditional on getting a 2.2 degree).

While there are no guarantees, around 85% of interns have received graduate offers in the last few years.

During your final year at university, you can keep in touch with the firm, and other interns, through our onboarding site – this is something everybody who joins BDO has access to.
